FrontBase
software acquisition, installation and licensing

The version used in this example is 4.1.16 for Mac OS X 10.3, the first item on the Download page (go to the main page, then click the Download link). While this can be used in a limited way, you will have to “purchase” (for free) a Developer license, which must be renewed (for free) every six months, in order to use the DAM for Omnis Studio with FrontBase.

While on the Download page, also download the item named V3 DAM for Omnis Studio 3.x version 1.5, which can be found near the bottom of the page. You will need to agree to licensing terms and supply your email address before getting access to the page where you can actually download the file.

If you choose to upgrade your evaluation copy of Omnis Studio to version 4.0.2 (the current one) Enterprise or Web Edition, be sure to download the V3 DAM for Omnis Studio 4.x version 1.6 from the FrontBase Download page instead.

To get your Developer license, click the Buy link on the FrontBase site navigation bar, then click the Licenses link on the page that appears, then scroll down the next page and click the Developer license link, following the steps from there through checkout. Be prepared to provide the MAC address (also known as the "Hardware address") of your computer. (FrontBase licenses are keyed to your hardware.) One of many ways of locating this string is through the Network Utilities application. Your license strings will arrive by email in a few hours after you apply for them.

To install your license, open FrontBase Manager. Then select Tools>License Management… from the main menu bar. Now click the Edit License pushbutton. Follow the instructions that came with your license for entering the License and Check strings and for completing the process.

Before we can move data from our OpenBase database into FrontBase, we need a FrontBase database to receive the structure and records. On the Monitored Databases window in FrontBase Manager, click the New icon. This will launch the New Database on localhost dialog where we tell FrontBase the name we want to give to the database we want it to create. Leave the Host value set to localhost and type in Company in the field for Database Name as shown here, then click the Create button.

A new database named Company will appear in the Monitored Databases window. In fact, it should also have been started running automatically. Its user is named _system and that user has no password for now. You can now close FrontBase Manager as we will not need it again for this exercise.
